What is Network Backup

Network backup suggests that workstation backup can be administered from a central server over a network. Network backup tasks are created by the company’s system administrator, while employees may stay totally unaware that their data is being backed up. Workstation backup runs in the background as Windows service, it is absolutely unnoticeable and doesn’t interfere with the user's work.

Backup Network Architecture

To configure network backup with Handy Backup Server, the system administrator has to define a Backup Server which will be used to manage network backup tasks and store data on backup storage media, and at least one Backup Network Workstation – remote computer containing data that will be backed up.

Handy Backup Server is installed on the administrator's machine. It is a server application that allows creating backup, synchronization and restoration tasks for remote computers. In addition to network backup, it allows you to back up ODBC-compatible databases, MS Exchange Server and Lotus Notes data stored on the server itself.

Note: The administrator’s computer must have access to all network computers that you need to back up.

Backup Network Workstation is client software installed on users' machines whose data needs to be backed up. Running as Windows service, it doesn’t have graphical interface and grant Handy Backup Server access to the computer data. Over certain periods of time Backup Network Workstations communicate with Handy Backup Server and confirm that they are accessible for backup.

Handy Backup Server and Backup Network Workstations are compatible with Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista operating systems.

How network backup works

  • Backup Network Workstations periodically contact Handy Backup Server, so it always has a list of computers available for backup over network.
  • Backup administrator creates a backup task on Handy Backup Server and adds the needed Backup Network Workstations to the backup set.
  • Handy Backup Server requests a list of data stored on the selected workstations. The administrator may choose to back up any particular files and folders or create a workstation backup image. Besides this, there are advanced backup plug-ins that allow saving MS Exchange and Lotus Notes data stored on the network computer.
  • Having finished with data selection, the administrator schedules the backup task and specifies different backup options.

The administrator can create a separate backup task for each remote workstation or a single task for all workstations in the network. In addition to network backup, you can back up ODBC compatible databases, MS Exchange Server data, Lotus Notes databases, and create disk image of your corporate server.
