Backup Software for Windows
We have to admit that most of us don’t have enough discipline to back up data regularly. When somebody says that he can easily cope with doing daily backups, he most likely forgets about many related actions, such as data compression, automatic assignment of timestamps (back-up time and data), encryption, copying to the storage, checking backup consistency, etc. Automation of these all is what backup software is about.

By definition, backup software is a program designed to protect information stored on a computer through creation of copies (backups) that can be restored if the original data are lost. It allows automating all processes, including logging, summarizing results, etc. Thanks to backup software, users can stop thinking of their data safety and focus on more important things.
Without going into details of various backup solutions, let's discuss main approaches to backup and technologies involved:
- File-based backup and HDD image-based backup. There is fundamental difference between file backup and disk imaging software. While the first type accesses data through standard file system queries, the latter backs up hard drive sectors, regardless of the system used.
- Selection of data for backup. Say that you want to back up data of a messaging client, like Outlook. Well-designed backup software won't require you to know where its files are located and what exactly you need to save to back up Outlook emails. Ideally this should look like this: you click "Outlook Backup" and the program does the rest on its own.
- Selection of storage for backup. The more supported devices and protocols backup software has, the better it is for the user. It's important to be able to store backup to a DVD disc, FTP server, or whatever else storage without the use of third-party software.
Most other features, such as compression, scheduling options, etc. can vary from program to program, and are not that important. Therefore, when choosing a backup software for your PC it is recommended to be guided firstly by the aforesaid criteria and make sure that the program complies with them, and only then go further into details.
