Backup Files to DVD
DVD discs are cheap, transportable, capacious, and generally very convenient for backup purposes. By recording backups to DVD, you protect data from local threats, such as HDD failure, malware and virus effects, your own mistakes, etc. In case of a data loss event, you can take a DVD disc and roll back to a previous situation in the past.
In many cases, backups kept on DVD provide the highest efficiency/price ratio. Let's see, which features should have a DVD-burning engine in backup software, to make data backups optimal:
- Disk erasure. When using optical discs, you always have to keep track if they have enough space to keep backups on them. Preliminary erasing of DVD before writing lengthens backup time, but strongly optimizes the entire process.
- Data spanning. Backup software must cover the case when backup size exceeds size of the disc you are recording to. It should correctly split files into multiple parts and then aggregate them together into an original file during restoration.
- Verification. Physically, optical DVD discs are scarcely protected from scratches, impacts and other damages, so it's explicitly recommended to verify backups after burning, and this must be supported by the program you use.
Software capable of recording backups to DVD, must have a thoroughly thought out algorithm of file indexing and logic of operation. Where should the index file containing information about the backup be stored: on a single disc, or on all of them? How important disc order during backup and restoration is? How should the program treat multi-layered discs? There may be different solutions, and not always backup software make it comprehensible and easy to use.
We hope that the aforesaid will help you to create a reliable backup plan and choose appropriate software for backing up to DVD. We welcome you to try out the utility we produce, Handy Backup.
