As a verb (to zip) it usually means to compress a file in the .zip file format. Zip files are created by using algorithms for compressing files into smaller amounts of space that were developed by Phil Katz in the 1980s.
As a noun (zip) it refers to a popular data compression format. Files that have been compressed with the ZIP format are called ZIP files and usually end with a .ZIP extension.
