Online backup client: backup your files to FTP



Backup your files to an FTP server with a flexible online backup client.

The main reason to use a online backup client is that it is the only way to backup to a remote FTP server. A backup client has special interface, allowing you to backup your files easily. Normally, a good online backup client has a number of specific options to backup to FTP, such as to use compression, encryption or a backup scheduler.

How to run an online FTP backup with Handy Backup?

To backup your files to an FTP server, first of all, you need to download, install and launch Handy Backup. Then please do the following:

  • (If you already have Handy Backup, press the "New Task" button in the top left corner of the main window.
  • Choose the Task Creation Wizard type: Simple or Advanced and press the "Next" button.
Simple Wizard
  • Click the "Add" button, select "Add Folders" or "Add Files" and add the files to backup to the backup set
  • Select to backup all files every time or only changed files and press the "Next" button
  • Select the destination where your website backup files will be stored and press the "Next" button
  • To compress your files, check the "Compress the backup data to save space" option
  • To encrypt your files, check the "Encrypt the data for security reasons" option and enter your encryption password twice
  • Press the "Next" button
  • To launch your online backup right now, leave the "Run now" option checked.
  • To set the program run your FTP backup on a schedule, leave the "Setup schedule" option checked
  • Press the "Next" button. If you unchecked the "Setup schedule option, skip the next step
  • Choose the desired option either to backup once, daily, weekly or monthly and press the "Next" button
  • Type in a name for your Task, say 'Online Backup' and press the "Finish" button
Advanced Wizard
  • Choose a name for your Task, say "Online Backup"
  • Choose "Backup Task" as an Task type to create a backup Task
  • Press the "Next" button
  • Click the "Add" button, "Add Folder" or "Add Files" to add your files to the backup set
  • Type in file types (i.e. *.txt) to backup only them or to exclude them from the backup
  • Press the "Next" button
  • Choose a destination where your files will be backed up
  • Press the "Next" button
  • Choose a backup type: full or incremental to backup all files every time or only changed ones
  • To backup files to a separate folder every timestamp accuracy period, check the "Store backups with timestamps" option.
  • To skip open, system, read-only or backup open files exclusively, press the "File-specific settings" button
  • Press the "Next" button
  • Choose whether to compress at all, compress files to a single file or individually
  • Type in a file name if compressing to a single file
  • Choose a compression level (the highest is recommended)
  • To encrypt your data, check the "Enable encryption" option and type in your encryption password
  • Press the "Next" button
  • To set a program to run your backup on a schedule, check the "Enable scheduler" option
  • Choose whether to backup daily, on weekdays, month days or on a custom period
  • To run backups that were missed when Handy Backup was not launched, check the "Run missed schedules"
  • To run your online backups on logon or logoff, check the corresponding options
  • Press the "Next" button
  • To backup to FTP right now, leave the "Execute this Task immediately" option checked
  • Press the "Finish" button
