Span
To span means to split a large volume of data, exceeding a size of a medium, to several media. This is widely used in backup operations, as backups are often large and are to be split often. This term is only used when applied to multiple media of the same type, like CD or DVD. Thus, data can be spanned to CDs and DVDs.
A span would mean a medium, to which a part of a large amount of data has been written to.
