Backup System
An abundance of hardware and software solutions for PC backup has a simple explanation: there can't be an ultimate backup system which will suit all users at once. Although most advanced and popular backup tools may have some fundamental differences, still it is possible to mark out common features that are a "must" for any backup system. Let's take a closer look what a good backup system looks like.
- Firstly, any backup system must perform all backup-related actions completely automatically. Why do you think most people don’t back up their data? Because this requires certain discipline and everyday attention, no matter if you need to do a lot of different things or only press a single button on an external HDD-based backup device. A good backup system should undertake all actions related to processing and storage of information on its own, on a given schedule. This includes data compression, encryption, verification, etc.
- Secondly, it is of great value if the user is allowed to select the exact data that he wants to backup. There are backup systems that allow backing up the entire HDD only while working quite well, they greatly lack flexibility. Being able to back up specific folders is much better, but still not perfect. Ideally, there should be presets for all types of data that people work with, which automatically locate and back up all necessary files and system registry entries (if necessary). For example, in Handy Backup we have an extensible system of backup plug-ins...
- Finally, a good backup system should provide as much versatility as possible in support for storage devices and data transferring protocols. Different storages provide different levels of data security. Depending on where you want backups to be stored, on local or external drives, optical discs, network locations, or other, it must offer an easy way to get the most of them. As regards network storages, systems commonly support LAN, WebDAV, FTP, SFTP, FTPS and other protocols the higher the number, the better the utility.
We hope that these simple explanations will help you to build the right backup system for your computer or network. We welcome you to try out Handy Backup - it's a great backup solution for any Windows computer or Windows-based enterprise LAN.
