Easy Backup
Easy backup what is it? Similarly to any other process, the measure of easiness or simplicity is defined by the amount of resources that you need to allocate to achieve the result. If we apply this definition to the area of data backup, then easy backup appears to be something providing the most effective data protection while requiring the minimal efforts, time and money.
Generally, easy backup can be resolved into five main aspects: automation, support for different data types, effective usage of storage, support for various devices and protocols, and security.
- Automation. An effective backup scheme should include a mechanism of backup automation where all tasks are started every day at a specified time (schedule-based automation), or initiated by some events, e.g. system startup. Automatic backup also implies that all related procedures (compression, storage, logging, etc.) are also performed independently of the user (since that's what easy backups are all about).
- Support for various types of data. Some system information can't be just copied to another place. The simplest example here is databases stored in computer's memory. Easy backup software mustn't require the user to be an IT-expert and know how to connect to databases. The user should only do a single click and select what he wants to back up; everything else must be done by the program.
- Effective usage of storage media. Storage media cost money, be it CD or DVD discs, external hard drive or an online storage. Not much of the people have access to unlimited free data storage, so an easy backup program should provide an option of backing up modifications only (incremental backup), file mask filtering (when you want to back up photos, for instance), compression, etc.
- Support for various devices and protocols. In terms of supported storages, the software should be as flexible as possible. If you want to record backups to DVD, then it should come with an integrated DVD burning engine. If you want to store backup to an FTP server, then there must be an FTP client. The same applies to any other device or networked storage.
- Security. It is of great importance that backups of important will not be accessible by unauthorized people. To make backups secure, different tools employ encryption algorithms, secure data transferring, etc. Also, it is wise to verify data after it's stored somewhere.
The realization of all these features in a simple, logical and user friendly interface is an art. But without it, a software can't be said to provide easy backups. Please check out our software Handy Backup - this is really something worth trying!
