Backup Database in Access 2010

Microsoft Office Access 2010 or Microsoft Access 2010 (MS Access 2010) is a database management system, part of Microsoft Office.

The functionality of each application has been improved in Microsoft Office 2010 and user interface has changed. MS Access 2010 provides better integration with Microsoft SharePoint.

There are two main reasons why it is important to know how to backup MS Access 2010 files.

1. Version Compatibility Issues

Users working with MS Access 2010, should take the version compatibility issues into account. There are some MS Access 2010 features that are not supported in MS Access 2007 and earlier versions. If you have installed Access 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2), in some cases you will be able to open and edit MS Access 2010 files.

However, you should note that the full functionality of MS Access 2010 is not available in earlier versions. Some elements can be opened in MS Access 2007 but can not be changed (for example, tables that contain Data Macros are read-only). New features introduced in Access 2010 do not allow you to save the database as MDB file format. You need to remove features not available in the MDB format to save the file.

Users working with different versions of MS Access should always backup all the files.

2. Data Loss Protection

MS Access 2010 provides improved security model that simplifies the process of protecting the database. Although this increases the level of security, it may not be sufficient to guarantee the data safety. Data that is stored on a hard disk is always at risk. MS Access 2010 does not support user-level security for databases created in the new format (ACCDB and ACCDE).

There are some ways to protect MS Access 2010 data:

  • Using server storage for database tables (for example, computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2010).
  • Using an automatic backup tool that makes the copies of your MS Access database.
