LAN Free Backup
The term LAN free backup is used to describe the process of backing up data without transferring it across LAN or WAN. This approach is highly efficient in enterprises as it doesn’t slow down the network and allows performing backups during work hours.
The simplest LAN free architecture is a server or a NAS backup device with backup storage (tapes, MO, CD, etc.) directly attached to it. A common approach is to use a SAN that connects the disks and backup storage via a Fibre Channel switch. This backup operation is commonly managed by a backup server.
