Microsoft Exchange Server Backup

Handy Backup provides an easy and reliable way to back up MS Exchange Server databases. Below is a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for users of Handy Backup regarding MS Exchange Server backup.

Q: What versions of MS Exchange Server does Handy Backup support?
A: Handy Backup meets the specification requirements for backup of the MS Exchange Server 2000/2003/2007 databases.

Q: What is the difference between MS Exchange Server 2007 and the earlier versions, e.g. Exchange Server 2003?
A: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 has gone for the more advanced protection of data, including anti-spam service, extendable anti-virus protection, data encryption, etc. Database limits have been removed, and the overall usability has been noticeably improved. Advanced users are sure to appreciate the command-line shell and scripting language that allows performing any task which can be performed in the GUI.

Q: What do I need to do to use the MS Exchange Server Backup feature in Handy Backup?
A: By default, MS Exchange Server backup feature is included into Handy Backup Full and Handy Backup Server editions. To perform backup of Exchange databases within Standard or Professional versions, the feature must be purchased as an additional plug-in.

Q: Do I need to interrupt the MS Exchange Server to perform a backup?
A: No, Handy Backup doesn’t require stopping the service to perform backups. However, restoration of MS Exchange requires several steps to be done.

Q: What do I need to do to restore MS Exchange on my computer?
A: To restore MS Exchange Server, you need to dismount the databases you want to restore via the MS Exchange System Manager and then run a usual restoration task with Handy Backup. The operation will overwrite the selected databases on the MS Exchange Server. For details, refer to the User Manual.
Note: We recommend that only technically qualified persons perform the restoration of MS Exchange Server. Incorrect use of the MS Exchange Server restore operation can lead to irreversible damage of your MS Exchange Server data.

Q: Can I modify the backed up files in the backup destination folder?
A: No, you can’t. It is highly recommended not to modify the backup contents, since the restoration is performed through the use of Handy Backup index file which stores the information about the original files.

Q: How secure is Microsoft Exchange Server backup performed with Handy Backup?
A: Handy Backup supports 128-bit blowfish encryption for any of the backed up files stored on your hard drives.

Q: Can I schedule MS Exchange Server backups with Handy Backup?
A: Yes, Handy Backup allows you to set a daily, weekly or monthly schedule for your tasks, depending on your needs. You may also re-run any finished task (without creating a new one), or edit any of the existing tasks and apply a new schedule to them whenever you want.

Q: Do I need to have any system administrative rights to perform MS Exchange backup and restore?
A: For successful operation of Handy Backup, you need to be logged under an account with Windows Backup and Restore privileges.

Q: Do I need to have Microsoft Outlook installed to back up MS Exchange mailboxes with Handy Backup?
A: No, Handy Backup is a standalone application and doesn’t require Microsoft Outlook to be installed on your computer.

Q: Is there a way to back up users’ Personal Folders (.PST files) if they never log out?
A: Microsoft Exchange Server clients are disconnected from .PST files after 30 minutes of idleness. To ensure accessibility to the .PST files, you need to schedule backup tasks for periods of inactivity (e.g. at nights).
